February: noun, 1.Shortest month of the year, 2. The month of love, 3. Black history month?

It’s interesting how we finally have a minority president in the United States, African American no less; yet this Black History month has been THE worst. I embrace my minority-ness at all times…rocking a Foxy Brown inspired Afro with a Marcus Garvey tee. Yes, I am the proud (West Indian) Black woman. I have read every book ever written by Cornell West. I randomly burst into Negro spirituals. Yes, I AM black history.

Is that all it takes? Have I given back to my community? Do I support black owned businesses? Have I made history?

Black History Month has turned into Black hiSTORY Month…full of ppl telling stories about suffering, overcoming adversity, seeking equality, and ending slavery. Maybe we should spend a little time fixing today’s problems instead of discussing yesterday’s. Maybe we should end the slavery that young black men and women are subjecting themselves to… This time “Masuh” isn’t the white man, it’s the objects they lie, cheat, steal, and kill for in an attempt to “make it”.

Let’s stop telling “stories” and start creating a history that the next generation will be proud of…
